次世代リーダー育成道場７期生からの報告！

＜はじめに＞

皆さん初めましてこんにちは！

次世代リーダー育成道場７期生、立川高校72期生として留学に行っている「郄木　現」です。

今回、立高生を代表して行っている活動として是非紹介したいとのことでこのような場を設けていただきました。私たちも高校生で留学することにどのようなメリットがあるか、体験を通しどのようなことを感じ学んでいるのか、などをみなさんと共有したいと思っています。

今年度、立川高校からは６人の研修生がプログラムに参加しています。そしてAコース、オセアニアコースの3人はオーストラリアのアデレードという場所に留学しています。

三人で話し合った結果、月ごとで順番に紹介していこうということになりました。

10ヶ月間という短い間ですがどうぞよろしくお願いします。

<アデレード>

私たちはオーストラリアの南オーストラリア州、Adelaide(アデレード)という所にいます。

海に面した小さな都市ですが大学や国際的な高校が多く、留学生や移民も多いです。美術館や図書館が多くあり、芸術的な街です。そして今は夏なのでとても暑いです。とても乾燥しているため水分補給は必須です。水といえばオーストラリアでは水はとても貴重です。コカコーラなどの飲料水が３〜４ドルで売られています（日本円で約300円）とっても高いです。その代わりに、ある店ではコーラフローズンが１ドルと安くて美味しいのでお気に入りです。

<言葉>

言葉についてです。これは個人差があるので僕の話をします。単語量はやはり足りません。授業では知らない単語が沢山あります。数少ない知っている単語を拾い集めて授業の概要を予測しています。そのおかげか授業についていけないとはあまり感じません。ですが授業よりも友達と話す方が大変です。彼らとの会話はとても早い上にスラングが使われているので自然な会話ができるようになるにはまだまだ時間がかかりそうです。英語を使えるようになるというレベルは僕が考えていた以上に高く、少し落ち込みました。今まで何を学んできたのか、自分の五年間の英語学習に懐疑心を抱きました。何よりもここでは英語を使う意図が違います。英語は生活する時に人とコミュニケーションをとるために使うのです。テストや入試のためではなく、生きていくために必要なのです。そこには意志が付随していることが求められています。こうしたい、あれはやだ、ごめんなさい、ありがとう、わかった、、、などといった気持ちを表現してくれる唯一の道具なのです。単語、文法、熟語、こういったものを並べ立てて覚えることも大切です。ですがここでは生きていくために使う最小限の言葉たちを片っ端から吸収しています。そして覚えた言葉を忘れぬうちに反芻しています。環境が違うだけで同じ言葉を学んでもその単語に対する存意が違ってきます。「言葉の価値に触れる」これはここでしかできない体験です。まだここへきて数週間ですがとても大切なことを学びました。沢山の「話せない」「聞き取れない」にぶつかって、成長したいです。

＜終わりに＞

初めの1ヶ月は苦難の連続です。沢山の初めてが不安を煽り、悄然とします。でも内心少し嬉しいです。この環境を一年前から望んでました。観光できてるわけじゃないんです。本気で英語力、仲間、視野、将来を広げにきたんです。立川高校で過ごした二年間、沢山の人に影響を受けました。自分の将来について真剣に考え、目の前の課題に必死に取り組む周りの友達に感化され、留学へ行くことに決めました。家族、先生、そして沢山の友達に背中を押され出発した僕に妥協は許されません。毎日必死で自分自身と向き合っていきたいです。

まだまだ話し足りませんが今回はこの辺で、、

来月は糸井さん、再来月は井出さんが留学生活について紹介してくれます。同じ都市といってもホストや学校が違うだけで生活は全く違います。三者三様、他の二人がどんな素敵な体験、発見をしているのか楽しみです。

英語でほぼ同じ内容の文章を書きました。そちらも是非見てください。友達に添削をしてもらいましたがこれが現段階での僕の実力です。まだまだ理想には程遠いです。自分の満足のいく文章を書けるように努力していきたいと思います。

Hi! How are you? I am growing accustomed to my life in Adelaide, Australia

<The beginning>

I’m Gen Takaki, a Tachikawa high school student. I am studying abroad in Australia for one year as ”Jisedai leader’s program”. This year, six people in our high school were chosen by this program and three of them went to Adelaide, Australia(The others will go to Canada or America this summer). We want to introduce our lives here in Adelaide, for instance, awareness, food, school, languages, friends, feelings, and the value of studying abroad in high school. There are quite a few people who don’t think it’s a good thing to study abroad in this chapter of our life, “It’s too early for you to go, you’re too young”. I too was told this by many people. But even at this point in time in my exchange journey, I have experienced a lot of things that I couldn’t have seized if I had given up the opportunity to go at that time. So, we would like to share our precious experiences with you. We hope that you enjoy reading our article for the next 10 months.

<Adelaide>

We are studying in the city of Adelaide. This is located in South Australia and faces the sea. It encourages art and academic successes. Due to this, there are many libraries, museums and international schools. There are not many threats to anyone’s safety, making it comfortable to study and live in. Now, as it’s summer, it is hot which means we need a lot of water. But, it’s expensive to buy drinking water compared to in Japan. There are temperature differences between morning and noon. I feel cold every morning.

<Language>

Needless to say, I use English every day. It’s hard to speak it fluently as you can imagine. When I realized that my English was unskilled at the current level, I was disappointed and frustrated.I can understand the overview of classes vaguely. But when it comes to talking with friends, I can’t understand what they talk about at all. They use slang and their conversations are so fast that just listening and following their talking takes all of my effort. The reasons behind the use of English is different in Japan compared to Australia. In general, we study it in order to pass the high school or university examinations. But here, as it is an English-speaking country, it is used every day in all that is done. English is the only tool to communicate with others, meaning it is a necessity. We need it to express ourselves, our feelings and our opinions.I use and remember the minimum number phrases and words possible to get by. I think this lead to my realization of the “value of language”. I want to discover awareness much more.

<The conclusion>

For the first month, I struggled with many obstacles. But I’m glad to have spent a portion of my life in this situation because I have always desired to live in this kind of environment. This is not just sightseeing. I came to here to change my way of thinking, improve my English skills, make a lot of friends, see things from different angles and consider my future. I was inspired by my friends from the two years that I spent in Tachikawa high school. They think about their future seriously and concentrate on the task at hand. I decided to study abroad because I was inspired by them. I was supported by my family, teachers, many of my friends. I want to be honest with myself. I would like to talk more about my experiences and such but I should finish off here.

The other two will introduce their experiences in the following two articles.

Although we live in same city, the articles will be different as our lifestyles here in Adelaide depend on our host families and our host schools.
