 <最後に>

Hello, everyone. I’m Miki Itoi. I am studying abroad in Australia as “Jisedai Leader’s Program”. I am going to tell you about my study abroad life. This is based on what I have experienced so far. I think my experiences have greatly changed by different schools and host families, so I hope you read this as an example.

 <Adelaide>

Adelaide is the very calm place with nice buildings lined up. There is the beautiful beach near the city. Most people are friendly, so we often talk with the clerks and bus drivers. Adelaide’s climate is very dry and the temperature difference between day and night is large.

 <My school life>

My school uniform is a polo shirt and fleece so we can move easily.

The class time is longer than in Japan. Students have to study Japanese, Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies for many hours in Japan. But we don’t have to do these subjects too much in Australia. In my school, there are many subjects that are not major in Japan, for instance: Hair Dressing, Electronics and Child Study. These classes are quite different from Japanese because many students talk about their opinions. I always learn many things in the interesting atmosphere.

I take “Outdoor Education”. This is the practical class. We acquire the knowledge to work outdoors and think about safety. We need the ability of giving presentations and writing reports. In my case, we learnt about safety when we swim in the sea and we went to Christies Beach to learn how to snorkel. We also went camping and experienced many things that we cannot do in daily life. In this way, the class in Australia is quite different from Japan. Verbally presenting reports is difficult for me but I like these classes very much.

There is recess time in the morning. We usually eat snacks at that time. At the lunch time breaks, some students eat lunch, others play outside or do club activities. In Japan, most of us have to do the club every day. But in Australia, many clubs are held once a week and we can do the activity in a short time. So, we are able to join many clubs and take a rest on weekends. But there is a lot of homework.

 <English>

It is difficult for me to speak English. Especially talking to my friends is hard. English which is spoken by the teacher is fast but I can listen and usually understand. But English which my friends speak is too fast so I can’t listen easily. I can’t tell my thoughts enough but I am trying hard to communicate in English.

There are many slang words and sayings in Australia. It is difficult to understand them. I recommend this video if you are interested in it. We can learn many differences in the English language.

 <The conclusion>

Two months have passed since I came here. I am getting used to living here little by little, but the language barrier cannot be overcome easily. Sometimes I am embarrassed, and feel frustrated and depressed. At that time, my host family, teachers and friends help me. I will never forget to appreciate other’s help and spend study abroad life.

Thank you for reading.
