次世代リーダー育成道場での経験（73期生からの報告）

 はじめに

　皆さんはじめまして。立川高校７３期、次世代リーダー育成道場研修生８期生としてニュージーランドに留学をしている「末松わ子」です。　ニュージーランドに来てから８か月が経ちました。ここでは、ニュージーランドでの8か月間の経験から感じたことを日本語と英語で書いていこうと思います。英語のほうには、日本語で書いていないことも書きました。英語も（日本語も、？）まだまだ勉強中ですが、一生懸命書きました。これを見ている皆さんが、海外生活や留学に少しでも興味をもってくれたら嬉しいです。どうぞよろしくお願いします。

　Hello everyone! I’m Wako Suematsu, a eighth-generation of the “jisedai leader’s program” and the 73rd year student at Tachikawa High School. I came to New Zealand (NZ) at the end of January because I wanted to know the difference between many countries and see things from different angles and get various points of view. Now, 8 months have already passed since I came here. I’m going to write about many interesting things I’ve ever seen and done. I hope you’ll enjoy reading my essay.

 ニュージーランドの食

　日本を出る前、心配事の一つでもあった食。しかし、ニュージーランドに来てから食で悩むことほとんどありませんでした。むしろ、美味しいものがたくさんあるおかげで食べすぎてしまうことを悩む、、、ということも（笑）日本と同じように、家族ごとに食べるものや習慣は少しずつ異なるので、あくまで私のホストファミリーのものを基にお伝えしていきます。

　みなさんは、ニュージーランドの伝統的な料理は何か知っていますか？ニュージーランドの伝統的な料理として挙げられるものは数多くありますが、ここでは「ハンギ」と呼ばれる料理を紹介します。ハンギは、原住民であるマオリ民族の料理です。ハンギの伝統的な料理方法は、ジャガイモやサツマイモ（サツマイモはニュージーランドでkumuraと呼ばれる）などの野菜、豚肉や鶏肉を、キャベツやバナナの皮で包んで、地面に掘った穴の中で蒸します。地面に十分な大きさの穴を掘るのと、蒸す過程で莫大な時間と労力が必要なので、kiwi（ニュージーランド人）であっても日常的に食べることはありません。ラッキーなことに、ホストファザーが家にあるポットとアルミホイル、網を使って自家製ハンギを作ってくれたので、私は一度だけ食べたことがあります。長時間低温で調理されているので、肉は柔らかく、とてもおいしかったです。ホストマザーやホストシスターは、「ハンギの独特な香りがない！」などと言っていましたが、、、（笑）

　私のホストファミリーは狩猟をするので、夕食として獲ってきた豚や鹿が食卓に並ぶこともあります！これらは、新鮮なまま調理されているからか野生動物独特の臭みは全くなく、とてもおいしいです。ホストファミリーは家の周りで羊を飼っているので、ラムを頻繁に食べられることも嬉しいです。

　Do you know about any New Zealand food? I think, the most famous “traditional” New Zealand food is “hangi”. Hangi is one of the Maori's traditional food, and is provided in some touristy spots. This is cooked in a hole dug in the ground, which includes fish and kumura(sweet potato). However, today, pork, lamb, potato, pumpkin and cabbage are also included. I ate hangi once before, thanks to my host father made us some for dinner one day. This is quite a precious experience for me. Normally, it takes a long time and lots of work to make hangi. Therefore, even though kiwis, some people haven’t eaten hangi before.

　Speaking of food, we eat meat for dinner every day. This might be because my host family go hunting very often. Therefore, there are lots of freezers to store meat. They hunt pigs, ducks, deer, sometimes cows, and sheep. Cows and sheep aren’t wild, but the others are wild, so they taste different from the ones we but in the supermarkets.I think, kiwis use their oven much more than Japanese to make meals as my host family do. If we use the oven, meat get softer and tasty.

　There is also big difference between the two countries in the style of breakfast and lunch. I think, in Japan, people eat their breakfast which someone made for them. In comparison, in NZ, they normally make their own breakfast and lunch by themselves. Of course, these things depend on each family.

 学校生活

　私の通っている高校は、朝8時45分から始まります。8時45分になったら、まず自分のhouse groupに行きます。House groupは、year 9（日本の中学２年生）からyear 13（高３）までそれぞれの学年の生徒が集まった一つのクラスのようなものです。このクラスのメンバーは一年間変わることはなく、何か行事が催されるときはこのグループで動いたりします。基本的には、毎朝このクラスで日ごとの連絡を聞くためにあります。毎日ハウスグループの後、５限授業を受け3時15分に帰宅という流れです。

　Year 11（高１）からは必須科目がなく、自分で興味がある科目を選択できます。私はyear 12（高２）に所属しています。私がとっている科目は、ESOL（留学生のための英語）、biology、tourism、design、PE（体育）、HOF（cooking）です。Tourismは観光業が盛んであるニュージーランドらしい科目ですね。特に私が留学をしているロトルアは、マオリ文化が色濃く残こっているため、これらや地熱をつかった観光業が盛んに行われています。このため、tourismではマオリの文化や言語について学ぶこともあります。ほかに、日本の高校にはないような教科と言えば、outdoor educationや、dramaが挙げられます。留学に行ったことがある多くの方々から殆どの授業でパソコンを使っていたという話を聞いていたので、ブラインドタッチに自信のなかった私はこのことをとても心配していたものの、実際行ってみたら授業でパソコンを使うことなどほとんどありませんでした、、、むしろ、立高にいたときのほうがパソコンを頻繁に使っていたような気がします。こういうことはやはり、通っている学校や選択している科目によってかなり違いがあるのだと思いました。

　しかし、授業形態や、授業中の生徒の態度には日本と差があると感じました。これも学校によって違いはあると思いますが、私の学校ではほとんどのクラスの机はグループになっています。そのため、わからないことがあればすぐに友達に聞くことができます。これは、英語が第一言語ではない私にとって嬉しいことです。しかし、一時期はコロナの影響で２ｍのソーシャルディスタンスを保った形となりました。

　Our school starts at 8:45 am. Our first class is called “House Group”. This is kind of a class, but there are about 25 students from different class levels. This time is for students to hear the notices for that day. Students go to their classes which they take until 3:15pm which is the time we finish our fifth class. We can choose our classes once we are in year 11. (Year 11 is the first year in high school in Japan.) I’m taking ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), cooking, design, biology, tourism, and physical education.

　There are many unique subjects such as tourism, design, drama, and outdoor education. Tourism is New Zealand’s biggest export industry, contributing 20.4% of total export. Therefore, lots of workers are employed in tourism here.8.4% of the total number of people are employed in the field of tourism in NZ, and many students want to work in the tourism field. That’s why, learning tourism is more popular in NZ than in Japan.Before I came here, people who studied abroad told me that it’s essential that they use their laptops instead of paper notes. I cannot type quickly, so I was worried when I heard that. However, we barely use laptops, and we don’t need to bring our own laptops even when we use them. It’s quite normal that these things change depending on each school.

　I knew that there are differences between the two countries in the style of classes and the attitudes of students during the classes. In NZ, the desks in the classes are making groups. Therefore, we can discuss anything anytime. This is quite a good thing for the international students like me. However, this thing changed because of Corona virus, and we had to break the group tables up and spread them out to keep the distance between each other. I will write about the effects of Corona virus in NZ in my next essay.

　I think, in NZ, lots of students ask their teachers questions in every class. Of course, there are some students who don’t tend to ask questions. However, it’s not uncommon to hear “Miss!” or “Sir!” by students. Some students ask their teacher even while the teacher is talking. Everybody feels they can ask the teacher questions while the teacher is talking or not, and also, it’s good that the teacher answers their questions very kindly.
